No Doubt get the key to the City.
No Doubt get the key to the Tragic Kingdom... well, actually, Anaheim Mayor Tom Daly presents the band with a key to the city on "Breakfast with Kevin and Bean," KROQ's morning show. This is the ultimate nod to a band that immortalized their backyard - and was determined to get played on their favorite radio station. No Doubt sells out three nights at the Long Beach arena and adds a fourth night at Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, their final show on the 2002 Rock Steady Tour.

Tip Of The Day
the shows have been going pretty well. i have to say that the audiences have been really good. thanks to all for giving us your energy. in florida, i wore some white playboy butthuggers on stage. i took multiple dumps before the gig as i always do and proceeded to have major skid marks by the end of the show. in fact, someone in the audience actually pointed it out. i have a new solution. after my last pre-show dump, i do my normal wipe, and then i do an extra cleanout with babywipes. i recommend these in the home if you don't have time to take a shower and you are suffering from what we call gig butt. that is my tip of the day.

Tony post-On The Road Again
Hey Everyone. So here we are, back on tour again. We've done two shows so far on this US leg of the Rock Steady tour. St. Paul and Chicago were both awesome and if they were any indication of how this tour is going to be we are going to have an amazing time. Tonight we play our first show with the Rolling Stones and on Monday the 14th we are doing a free concert in Nashville, TN (on the corner of First Avenue and Broadway at 12 noon). Also, look for Gwen and Tom doing an acoustic performance of "Underneath It All" on MTV's TRL sometime next week.
Hope to see you soon.

No Doubt rocks the house
A triple shot of female led bands, headed up by No Doubt, rocked a packed house at Cricket Pavilion Saturday night, leaving the area surrounding the venue rumbling with excitement long after the show ended.
No Doubt, led by the stunning Gwen Stefani, were clearly on top of their game for the entirety of their one hour and forty-five minute set. 'Hella Good' kicked off the career-spanning setlist.
The band managed to put as much passion into the older material as it did into the new tunes. 'Spiderwebs' and 'Bathwater' sounded just as amazing live as did newer tracks like 'Hey Baby' and the island-flavored 'Underneath It All.'
On the chilly November night, No Doubt seemed downright giddy to be playing together. Its energy level never wavered throughout the packed show. The infectious, positive vibe had the near capacity crowd hopping and pumping its fists at every song.
Although the band has reached superstar status, they keep things simple and zoned in on the music. The stage's bare-bones design kept the focus on the music. There was no fancy lighting or stage design to distract fans from the band's energetic performance. The only real extravagance was an enormous TV screen to give those in the back a better view of the show.
Stefani oozed confidence and poise as she ran, jumped and even cartwheeled her way around the stage. The singer's voice was dead on all night. It's a wonder how someone could have the stamina to give such a lively performance night after night.
The So. Cal band genuinely seem to love what they do and even more so, seem sincerely appreciative of their fans' support. Stefani often stopped to thank the crowd and interact with them. At one point, she brought up a fan that was apparently wearing one of her dresses and took pictures with her and filmed her on the band's onstage video recorder.
The reggae-influenced tracks off of the band's latest release Rock Steady, were delightful to listen to live, especially the title track. The two multipurpose musicians the band is touring with were simply fun to watch. They danced in a near aerobics style fashion all night long and still managed to sing backup vocals and play their instruments at the same time.
One of the rare slower segments of the night was a mini-acoustic set the band played on a small catwalk that stretched into the front of the stage. The band's acoustic take on Rock Steady's sweet love song 'Running' surprisingly turned out to be one of the night's best performances.
Stefani worked the female dominated crowd into a frenzy on most offerings, not that it took much to get the over-excited gathering going. Highlights included the punk-tinged 'Ex-Girlfriend' and the rocking 'New.'
One of the funniest moments of the night came from bassist Tony Kanal. As guitarist Tom Dumont played the opening notes of the mega-hit 'Don't Speak,' Kanal held a lit lighter up in the air to which many fans copied the cliched rock ballad ritual. Stefani was given a bit of a break during the song as the crowd sang the entire first verse without any help from the singer.
Drummer Adrian Young was his usual zany self wearing a dress, thigh-high pink argyle socks and blue boxer shorts, but with musical chops like he has, no one seemed to mind his unique attire.
Despite all the recent success the band has received from the new album, the most spirited moment of the night came when the band played their breakthrough hit, 'Just A Girl.' Stefani coyly flirted with the audience during the song when she got down on the floor and did multiple push-ups proving that she is one tough chick.
Shirley Manson and her band Garbage played a solid set mostly filled with songs from the band's third release, beautifulgarbage. The quartet is one of the most inspired and unique rock acts around today.
The punk outfit The Distillers, led by Brody Armstrong, opened the night with a high energy, promising set.
All three bands took to the stage for a cover of Blondie's 'Call Me,' with the lead singers from each band taking turns singing the verses of the classic song to close out the night. The three leading ladies have the potential to be as influential in their own right as Blondie's Deborah Harry has become.

Gwen Stefani has proven herself time and again a tigress synonymous with the words “Female Empowerment.” Interestingly enough she powdered up her nose and slathered on the lipstick whilst shouting as loud as she could to everyone that would listen. The words “I’m just a girl, ‘cuz that’s all you’ll let me be” became a key tagline among young girls prancing around junior high campuses.
Well, here we are some seven years since the release of the band’s pivotal record Tragic Kingdom. What’s changed? Not much. All the fans are pushing their twenties now and still loving every word from Gwen’s pouty apple lips. And why shouldn’t they? After all, No Doubt puts on one hell of a party.
November 17th celebrated the one year anniversary of Rain in the Desert nightclub at the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The ladies and gents from No Doubt and the Distillers pranced around in a mishmash of Pop, Punk, Ska, and all together sassiness for one soaking night of fun. No Doubt’s set was comprised of a clever mix of tracks from all of their LP’s. Bouncing in between current single “Underneath It All” and older tracks like “New,” Gwen found herself in a playful mood, often times shouting at the girls to jump and scream, other times doing cartwheels and push ups on stage.
Drummer Adrian Young’s stage antics were nearly as entertaining as the songs that night. Wearing little else but boxers and lipstick on stage, Young often did robot dances and drummed one armed to take gulps from his precious beer bottle. Flanking the stage with stringed energy were guitarist Tom Dumont and bassist Tony Kanal, whose playful tug of war on stage with Gwen was interesting to watch.
Overall the set proved to be fun and exciting, so much in fact that No Doubt blessed the audience with an encore comprised of such radio friendly classics as “Spiderwebs” and “Don’t Speak.” No Doubt may be a band born for the television and radio waves, but all in all they are fun to listen to, and even more fun to watch on stage.

Recapturing their first ceremony, G&G said "I do" again at a second private ceremony at record label pal Jimmy Iovine's Hollywood home. What girl wouldn't want to wear her wedding dress twice and say "yes" to her long-time love?? They toasted and danced into the wee hours with family, band family and many friends.

No Doubt's Stefani Watches Fiance Rossdale, Talks Wedding
07/02/2002 12:00 PM, Yahoo! Music
Jerry Armor
(7/2/02, 12 p.m. ET) -- No Doubt's Gwen Stefani turned up a day early at last weekend's Glastonbury Festival in the U.K. to watch fiance Gavin Rossdale and Bush during the band's set on Friday (June 28).
Stefani talked about her upcoming wedding and revealed her dress is by designer John Galliano. "I get my fitting, like, next week or something. He's one of my favorites, he's so talented and amazing, " she told Britain's Radio 1.
Stefani also talked about being a bride. "Am I going for the natural look? Absolutely not," she said. "Am I gonna be something that I'm not? No. I'm gonna see how it comes out that day. It's gonna be a little spontaneous."
During No Doubt's own performance on Saturday (June 29) Stefani climbed up atop a speaker, then found herself stuck, realizing she couldn't get down on her own. The band was one of the few American acts to appear at Glastonbury. "It's just a whole different vibe, the European festivals, compared to maybe some of the ones they try and do in America," she said. "There's just something that's a lot more free-spirited, and everybody just really takes time off to go and just have fun and enjoy life, which is really cool--and listen to music!"
No Doubt plays the Quart Festival in Norway this Wednesday (July 3) and the band celebrates the Fourth Of July at the Midtfyns Festival in Odense, Denmark.

Gwen Stefani: Wax On, Wax Off

Even though our fabulous photographer, Richard Beland, missed all of Friday¹s bands at Glastonbury, he couldn¹t miss out on the very colorful No Doubt and their hot hot hot frontwoman Gwen Stefani. Richard Beland described her as being the "most fashionably dressed rock star present this day" and this photo is testament to that.
Struck in what can be described as a faux "Crane" move from The Karate Kid, Gwen karate-chopped some energy into them thar Brits as her band tore into some of their hits. Yeah, she might¹ve gone through some weird-assed looks both in the past and recently (the Waterworld one from that "Hella Good" video comes to mind), but you can¹t deny a photogenic person when you see one. You go, girl.

Gwen post-Euro Bound
Hey All Ya'll,
Just sitting in my hotel room in Germany after doing a photo shoot with the guys for Q Magazine. It was actually a really fun day.
Little Mason makes the whole thing different in a beautiful way.
We all hung out, shot a few pictures, did a few interviews, and enjoyed the beautiful Euro landscape. All of us together with the baby and Tom’s delicious girlfriend Mieke who is out on the tour as well. I love it...a little café tucked away in a picture perfect narrow alleyway. All of us sipping coffee and drinking beers, watching Mason puke on the cobblestone. Our lives are really amazing. One of my favorite parts of our success is being able to travel the world and experience different people and cultures…a true blessing. We played Berlin and Cologne and both shows were incredible, some of my favorite of the year. So much energy and really hot and fucking SWEATY!!! All my makeup came off!!
Everyone is a bit jet lagged but it’s all good.
Tomorrow we are playing a festival with Garbage and Nelly Furtado.
Gonna’ be good to see my girl Shirley, she’s such a cool one.
Last week was completely mad.
We have been so busy. We recorded all the voices for the new Malice video game and it took forever! I had a sore voice by the end of it.
I hope it turns out cool.
All my girlfriends threw me a bachelorette party that was so incredibly fun I barely made it to the 12 noon bridal shower that my sister and my lovely sister-in-law gave me the next morning. We had a beautiful dinner at my girl Christine's house and I got loads of sexy outfits for my honeymoon. We looked at old photos, talked, laughed, and drank till we were sick!
After that we all went out to a club and danced to Jamaican Dancehall.
It all ended in tears and falling out of the limo into Gavin's arms in my front yard.
Christine is getting married soon too and ended up in the neighbor’s bushes.
Don’t ask me what time that was.
Those girls definitely gave me a night to remember or not to remember.
All of us in dark sunglasses the next morning rolled in late to the shower with about 80 friends and family!! I opened so many presents and it was a beautiful day.
The cake helped with the hang over.
To end the week we shot the video for the next single “Underneath it All.” I’m really excited about this single ‘cause this is the song we wrote with Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics.
Can you imagine growing up totally admiring someone as a fan and then getting to write a really beautiful song together? This is a really special song to me and it totally documents a precious time of love, understanding, and realization.
I’m so in love at the moment I could burst.
We were lucky enough to do the video with one of my best girlfriends Sophie Muller.
This is the 7th video that we’ve made together.
She is one of my most talented friends. She hooked up with another team of directors named Logan to do some special effects that are really amazing. It makes sense that we collaborate on this video because it goes with theme of Rock Steady. It has been of year of collaborations and experiments. I don’t know how much I should tell you about the video. I sorta want it to be a surprise. I will tell you that it is pretty simple. It starts off with me totally made up with loads of makeup and hairdos, clothes, etc. and I slowly strip it away to a natural no makeup vibe: underneath it all…get it? I haven’t seen it yet but Sophie is pretty incredible so I’m thinking it is going to be a good one.
Well gotta try to sleep now. We have to get up early!! I’m not a morning girl by the way.
Sending love and a Rock Steady Vibe,Laters,g-LAMB
P.S. Thanks to everyone that bought Rock Steady and tickets to the shows. It means everything to us. You give us this life and we know it and appreciate it.
By the way I’m in a really good mood!
Kisses g

No Doubt rock in the open air on Jay Leno's new Summer outdoor performance space. This, their fourth date with Jay, was a hella good time with "Hella Good." Later that night, Gwen has a hell of a good time on her bachelorette drinking and dancing party that brought her and her closest friends sip, slurp and dance to Jamaican Dancehall music. When the limo arrived back home in the early morning hours, Gwen fell into Gavin's waiting arms (and a friend fell in the bushes!). The next morning, Gwen, in dark sunglasses, ate cake and opened presents at her 80-person bridal shower.

No Doubt To Mix It Up On 'Malice'
05/20/2002 5:00 PM, Yahoo! Music
Brett Anderson
(5/20/02, 5 p.m. ET) -- No Doubt will collaborate Vivendi Universal Games (a division of Vivendi Universal Publishing) and Interscope Records for a character-based, three-dimensional action-adventure videogame titled Malice, which will feature characters voiced by bandmembers as well as songs from their Rock Steady album.
The partnership will also introduce No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani as the voice of unexpected hammer-wielding heroine Malice, and bassist Tony Kanal, guitarist Tom Dumont, and drummer Adrian Young as the voices of her counterparts within the game. No Doubt will provide three tracks for Malice's game music and television-advertising campaign. Some of the tracks will be remixed to compliment the game's look and feel.
"Having our songs in Malice is another way to get our music to people who might not otherwise hear it," said Stefani. "We make music--that's what we do and we love to share it."
Kanal added, "Being a band that grew up in the videogame generation, the fusing of videogames and music is exciting to us. To be involved with a game during its creative development was a cool opportunity, so we jumped at the chance to be part of Malice." Malice--which was developed by Argonaut Games PLC and will be published by Sierra Entertainment, Inc.--is due for worldwide release this fall on both the Xbox videogame system and the PlayStation 2 computer-entertainment system.
In related news, No Doubt will open for the Rolling Stones on three of their U.S. tour dates, including stops at Turner Field in Atlanta on October 26, Ford Field in Detroit on October 12, and the Toronto Skydome in Toronto on October 18.

LOS ANGELES, May 17 - Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games), a division of Vivendi Universal Publishing, Interscope Records and recording artist No Doubt announce today their collaboration on the upcoming release of Malice(TM), a character-based, action-adventure game, developed by Argonaut Games PLC (AGT.L) and published by Sierra Entertainment, Inc. Malice is due to release worldwide this fall on both the Xbox(TM) video game system and the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system.
No Doubt, currently on a worldwide tour to promote their album, Rock Steady, will provide three songs for Malice’s in-game music and television advertisement campaign. Some of the songs will be remixed to compliment the game’s look and feel.
"Having our songs in Malice is another way to get our music to people who might not otherwise hear it," says Gwen. "We make music -- that’s what we do and we love to share it."
"Being a band that grew up in the video game generation, the fusing of video games and music is exciting to us," said Tony. "To be involved with a game during its creative development was a cool opportunity so we jumped at the chance to be part of Malice."
"This collaboration between Vivendi Universal’s Games and Music divisions is a prime example of the unique, synergistic opportunities available within the Vivendi Universal family of companies," said Luc Vanhal, President & COO of Vivendi Universal Games. "Music and movies have long been a natural pairing," he continued. "Music and games is the logical next step in the evolution of interactive entertainment and we’re pleased to partner with Interscope Records and No Doubt to take the gaming experience to the next level."

Gwen post-I've Been Soooo Sick...
I'm so sad and so sorry that we had to cancel some shows.I've been really sick for about two weeks and still playing the shows so I haven't been able to get better (I wish I was super human!). I have been forced to take a few days off to recover so we can hopefully do the rest of the US tour. Thanks to everyone who has come out to the shows so far...they have been really fun and rewarding. I am doing everything I can to get better and hopefully I will be back to normal, booger free, and ready for you to rock me again soon. A real love survives a Rock Steady vibe.Kisses, loves, and apologies. Gwen

Tom post-Finally A New Post
What's up everybody?
Its been forever since anyone has posted here,
I guess we've been swamped out here on the road.
Tony and I have been answering questions at "Ask No Doubt", so by all means check it out. We're in Lowell, Massachusetts today, after a show in Ithica New York and vey little sleep last night.
Gwen is sick and trying to rest and heal, her voice sounds good but she's hurting.
Maybe staying in new York for a few days will help her rest.
Also Tony and Gwen and I have been trying to do yoga out here, as you might guess I'm the least flexible...A big shoutout to all the cool fans coming out to the shows, you guys rock!Until next time...Tom

Tony post-Busy At Home
Hello Everyone, Just wanted to give you a quick update.
We're home for a couple of weeks and keeping ourselves busy with a bunch of stuff before we leave for Europe to do a month of shows and festivals.
Today we're in the studio recording some audio commentary to be included as bonus footage on the "Live In The Tragic Kingdom" DVD (yes we are finally planning on getting that out later this year!). In addition, we're doing our voice-overs for the Malice video game that will be released this Fall. On Friday we'll be playing "Hella Good" on the Jay Leno show and next week we are filming the video for "Underneath It All" which will be directed by our good friend Sophie Muller.
See you soon.

No Doubt's in a party mood with chart-climbing 'Rock Steady'
Friday, March 15, 2002
By GENE STOUT
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER POP MUSIC CRITIC
Think of No Doubt's latest CD,
"Rock Steady," as a party album with an edgy Caribbean groove.
Though it was named for the ska-influenced Jamaican dance music of the late '60s, the album was inspired by the music of choice at No Doubt's after-show parties
while on tour two years ago. Band members, friends and family often celebrated
into the wee hours to the sounds of dancehall -- the exuberant blend of reggae,
ska and calypso currently popular in Jamaica's clubs and studios.
"We'd have after-show parties almost every night on the 'Return of Saturn' tour," drummer Adrian Young said by phone from his home in Long Beach, Calif.
"Tony (Kanal), our bass player, had all these dancehall CDs, and we played them
all the time. The sound just kind of carried over into our own music when
we started working on the new album last year."
"Rock Steady," which blends dancehall with pop, rock, R&B, hip-hop and new wave, employs drum machines and boasts a crew of star producers much like a hip-hop record.
"We broke a lot of rules on this album," Young said. The success of "Rock Steady," which recently reached No. 9 on The Billboard 200 album chart, has boosted momentum for No Doubt's current tour, which opened this week in Puerto Rico and includes sold-out shows Wednesday and Thursday nights at the Paramount Theatre. The tour features opening act The Faint, a Nebraska-based electronica band.
Stylistically, "Rock Steady" marks a return to the California pop-rock group's late-'80s roots, when blond and sassy singer Gwen Stefani led a ska-influenced party band that played at local clubs in Southern California.
By 1989, the group had settled on a lineup that included Stefani, Young, Kanal and guitarist Tom Dumont. It wasn't until the mid-'90s that No Doubt had its first hit, the bouncy "Just a Girl" from the 1995 album "Tragic Kingdom." The album also yielded two other hits, "Spiderwebs" and the mega-ballad "Don't Speak."
No Doubt's follow-up album, "Return of Saturn," was produced by Glen Ballard, the creative force behind Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill." The "Return of Saturn" tour, which brought the band to Seattle for the June 2000 grand opening of the Experience Music Project, helped dispel a notion that the band was just a flash in the pan.
"After 'Return of Saturn' we had nothing to prove," Young said. "So we just followed the music."
The band had planned to take a break after the tour, but began writing songs.
"It wasn't like we wanted to do another record right away," Young said. "But Gwen, Tom and Tony wanted to write songs because they're songwriters and that's what they do. The ideas got pretty exciting and the inspiration came along, and all of a sudden we found ourselves doing an album."
The songs on "Rock Steady" were recorded in five cities -- London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Minneapolis and Kingston, Jamaica.
"It wasn't really planned that way. It just happened," Young said.
The album features a distinguished cast of producers, including Prince (who co-produced and sang backing vocals on the breakbeat-laden "Waiting Room"), William Orbit ("Making Out"), Nellee Hooper ("Rock Steady," "In My Head," "Running," "Detective" and "Hella Good") and Rick Ocasek ("Platinum Blonde Life" and "Don't Let Me Down").
The group also worked with two of Jamaica's finest producer teams, Sly & Robbie (on "Hey Baby" and "Underneath It All") and dancehall duo Steely & Clevie (on "Start the Fire").
"We went to Jamaica because we'd always wanted to go," Young said. "And we thought it was a great opportunity to work with some great reggae producers.
"Steely and Clevie had never worked with a live drummer before. They would come up with drum machine stuff and say to me, 'OK, go into the booth and try to do that,' thinking I couldn't. But when I did, they were just flabbergasted. They were like, 'A human can do this?' So we ended up using live drums on 'Start the Fire.'"
The song "Waiting Room" predates the "Return of Saturn" album. It was recorded in 1998 with Prince, who had used Stefani's vocals on one of his own songs, "So Far So Pleased."
"We went out to Minneapolis and Prince and Gwen worked on the song while the rest of us just kind of watched," Young said. "And then we came back to L.A. and did some more work on it as a band and put it in the vault, where it sat for several years."
For Young, the self-described "rock guy" of the band, working with Ocasek (of Cars fame) was the most fun.
"Rick was awesome, totally rad," Young said. "What we did with him was really up my alley. It was kind of a departure, a return to the way we used to record, where we set up, rock out and go on with the producer and just do it."
The first single from the new album is the throbbing "Hey Baby."
"'Hey Baby' has so many keyboards that when we play it live, there are four people on stage playing keyboards," Young said. "It's me and Gwen doing what we do and then four other guys -- Tony, Tom, Gabe (McNair) and Steve (Bradley) -- are all playing keyboards."
Late last year, No Doubt was the opening act for U2. On Feb. 15, No Doubt joined R.E.M., Lauryn Hill and Cher at the "Love Rocks" concert in Hollywood honoring Bono for his charity work. Among the trio of songs the group performed was U2's "The Sweetest Thing."
"It was really bitchin' and weird at the same time," Young said. "It was a seated theater and there were a lot of, let's say not-so-young adults. Bono was there in the front row with a bunch of celebrity types like Tom Cruise and Sean Penn and all these other people."
The audience gave No Doubt a standing ovation.
"That's not typical for us, to get a standing ovation," he said. "I felt like I was in a play."

"On the road again, I'm so glad to be on the road again." No doubt begins the mega Rock Steady tour, their first full tour in two years, in San Juan, Puerto Rico (and it's not just cuz they wanted to hit the beach first!). With five albums worth of material, the band has plenty to rock about... and if you caught their show in L.A. or Las Vegas, wow, titillating! At both shows, the band was joined on stage by Hollywood's infamous, feather-boa strutting, cabaret dancers The Pussycat Dolls during "Bathwater" and "Hey Baby." And, while in Vegas, the band was presented with commemorative No Doubt Rock Steady limited edition $5 chips by the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. No Doubt's Anniversary Party
In which we celebrate the union of Gwen and Gavin, the spectacular success of the little So-Cal band that could and the arrival of a dangerous character known as the Douche
Neil Strauss
Thousands of Staind and Linkin Park fans are packed into the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, unaware that No Doubt are about to make a surprise appearance. And, to tell the truth, no one is sure if these fans really care. No Doubt are the only band tonight with a female member, the only group more attuned to ska and reggae than rap and rock, and the only act whose current single, "Hey Baby," is full of New Wave electronics and drum-machine beats. There is no aggression or angst to be found in "Hey Baby," kids, just Gwen Stefani singing about sipping chamomile tea. Can you relate to that?
It is Sunday, December 9th, 2001, and it is the sixth anniversary of many things for No Doubt. In 1995, performing at this same holiday concert for local radio station KROQ proved a pivotal moment for the group and its breakthrough album, Tragic Kingdom, which went on to sell 10 million copies and transform this oddball Orange County, California, band into international superstars. It was also the night that Stefani met Gavin Rossdale, the singer of the show's headlining band, Bush, setting off a six-year relationship that continues to this day. And it was the night the Douche first appeared. Yes, the Douche. Watch out for the Douche.
The Douche, anyone from the band will tell you with equal parts glee and dread, is guitarist Tom Dumont's alter ego when he's drunk. At the time, No Doubt had just landed the prized opening gig on Bush's upcoming tour. The bands hadn't met before, and no one was more excited about breaking the ice than Dumont, who idolized Bush guitarist Nigel Pulsford. Unfortunately, Dumont got drunk and the Douche arrived at the KROQ show instead. He barged into Bush's dressing room, walked up to Pulsford, who plays Fender guitars, and spat, "Fender sucks!" Eventually the band kicked him out. The next day, No Doubt received a frantic phone call from Bush's record company, telling them that if they couldn't keep themselves under control, they'd be off the tour.
Tonight, Bush and No Doubt are together on the KROQ bill again, and they are both facing a new predicament: Most of their fans who were teens in 1995 are now grown up. Each band must win over a new audience.
"We were, like, nothing six years ago," says Stefani.
Sort of like At the Drive-In when they opened this concert last year?
"Yeah," she says. "But not as cool."
No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal, Stefani's ex-boyfriend, looks at the band's career like the original Star Wars trilogy. Tragic Kingdom was Star Wars, exploding out of nowhere to become a huge international phenomenon. Return of Saturn, the follow-up, was The Empire Strikes Back, darker and less entertaining, and left people scratching their heads. Rock Steady, their new dance-hall-meets-New Wave album, recorded with Ric Ocasek, Prince, rap producers the Neptunes, Nellee Hooper of Massive Attack, and reggae tweakers Sly and Robbie, is Return of the Jedi. "It's, like, full of Ewoks," Kanal says. "You know, just happy."
Happy and fun are the operative words for No Doubt this time around. Stefani can't stop talking about how thrilled she was to see their poster outside Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard. There's only one thing she's more excited about right now, and that's spending time with Rossdale.
"Can you ever know that one person is the one?" she asks. "I'm always questioning that. I think we both question that. The one year that I think we had so much fun together was this year, because we spent so much time together and got to really know each other." She pauses. "Not that we didn't know each other already." She pauses again. "I just can't believe it's been six years." Any concerns that No Doubt won't fit into the hard-rock lineup disappear as soon as the band is announced and the audience erupts for the hometown heroes. Moving onto the stage, Stefani rolls her torso like a belly dancer with a spinal problem; Kanal, with spiked blond hair, skanks around like a cockroach; drummer Adrian Young, shirt off and mohawk up, slaps his own ass; and Dumont, he just looks uncomfortable.
The band leaves the stage feeling good. Rock Steady will be released in two days, and all is well. "It's just such a magical year," Stefani says. "It's sad, because I know we're going to have a crash landing at some point, because we're just riding so high. Touring to me is becoming harder. The physical part of it is hard, the traveling part is hard, being away from people you love is getting harder and harder."
Later, backstage, Rossdale arrives in No Doubt's dressing room, slumping around in a hat pulled anonymously over his eyebrows. Stefani, enthroned at the back of the room, spies him and seems unable to focus on the conversation she is having with a friend. Soon, the happy couple leaves arm in arm. Thus begins a pattern that continues in the next week: Every time Rossdale arrives, he and Stefani disappear.
It's not simply that they want to be alone. Stefani says that in six years, they have never been together around a journalist. They are adamant about keeping their relationship private. And despite how clearly in love they are, their time together hasn't been easy. Much of Rock Steady is about how hard it is having a relationship that's not only long-distance but also between two people in different touring rock bands.
Stefani remembers writing a song with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. "The day before we went over there, I was in the park with Gavin, and I had been keeping a journal," she says. "And we were so in love, and I wrote that line, 'You're lovely underneath it all.' You know, like, 'After all the shit we've been through, you're a really good person. I really think I might like you.' "
Stefani is a bit obsessive, to put it mildly. "I'm really self-centered," she admits. "I really am. I'm also pretty lazy. I love to sit around and watch TV, and eat ice cream, not work out and be a slob."
There seem to be two things that make her world go around: Rossdale and No Doubt. Nothing else much matters. I learn this during dinner with her and the band. She slinks into the restaurant in a gray sweat shirt with a hood pulled over her face. Her shoulders curve so she is practically staring at the floor. As she eats, she only perks up twice: The first time is when Kanal says he's upset that a journalist called him "anal." "Well, you are anal," she says to her ex. The second is when her new album is discussed:
The new record is more . . . sexy.
Yeah, the record does have a sexiness and a hipness that we've never had before. The thing about the sexy side, for me, is that I earned it. It wasn't until I felt comfortable wearing high heels, because when you're on heels -- dude, you should try it -- all of a sudden you're sexy. I finally feel like there's a side to me like, "I'm a woman now," which is fine.
That's pretty good -- you're thirty-two.
Yeah, I never felt really strong growing up. I didn't know where I fit in. All the women around me that I could look at were in bands like L7 or Hole. They were angry, and I didn't really feel like that. And the other ones were these folky girls, so there wasn't really anybody, until I discovered Blondie. She was sexy, and she wasn't ashamed to be rocking out, and to me, that's having it all. Because we all want to be sexy, even guys do. It's in human nature, because we've gotta have babies.
But the way you work, it is all your own.
I think the whole sexy thing, to do it seriously, is just a joke. I mean, have you seen me when I wake up in the morning?
Stefani was raised in a Catholic family, which is what she blames for her worst faults -- namely, that she is too judgmental and not open enough. "My brother was an artist since the day he was born," she says, referring to Eric Stefani, who left No Doubt during the recording of Tragic Kingdom. "He would win all the awards at school. I didn't have to do anything, because I had him. I was always a passive person, a one-on-one person. I always had my one best friend, and I didn't have lots of girlfriends. I never have."
Outside of the first boy she kissed, Stefani has dated only two people: Kanal and Rossdale. As for her goals in life, starting a family is the only one she hasn't yet fulfilled. In her music, she's already there: "Having a song ['Don't Speak'] that's going to be there when you're dead is just, I'm sorry, but it's just pretty cool," she says.
An evening with Stefani: When No Doubt walk the red carpet at the Billboard Awards in Las Vegas, the paparazzi scream not for the band but for "Gwennnn," who obliges them by opening her fur jacket and sticking out her chest, which is covered by just a bikini top. Later, a fan runs up to Kanal. "Man, I love your band," he says. "I have to ask you: When you guys first got together, did you just think, 'Wow, she is hot!' " Kanal doesn't answer.
Young comes from the opposite background of Stefani. He was born to hippie parents, though his mother left when he was young. The exhibitionist of the band, Young is a madman with a conscience. When he heard that a girlfriend was cheating on him, he got drunk, wrote that she was the Antichrist across the driveway of the Anaheim, California, house where the band lived and passed out on the roof. Since the house belonged to Stefani's parents, he spent the next morning scrubbing the driveway.
Now married (to a woman who used to work in the band's touring production office) and with a child on the way, he's mellowing out. He just wants to drive some golf balls and be with his wife, though he still can't seem to avoid singing, "Hey, we want some pussy," during any lull in the conversation.
An evening with Young, age 32: In the bar of a New York hotel, Stefani lifts her glass for a toast: "To fifteen years of blood, friendship, love and the release of our new record." Young stands up and takes off his jacket. Underneath is a faded No Doubt shirt. "It's from 1987," he says. "I bought it at a No Doubt show." Young is the band's newest member, having joined in 1999; before that he was the band's biggest fan. "You shouldn't wear that shirt," says Stefani. "You should frame it, and cut it so that both sides show in the frame." Young says nothing, but it is clear that in his mind, shirts are for wearing.
Kanal, as cool as he seems, is the band's most tightly wound character. His father and mother moved from India to London and then emigrated to America with their two young sons in 1981. Eventually, they opened a store in Anaheim called Kanal's Gifts and Fashion. "They're such beautiful people," says Stefani of Kanal's parents, "and they have such open minds. Especially in their community, because all their friends' kids are rich and going to Harvard. And here was Tony. In a band. With a white girlfriend."
An evening with Kanal, age 31: After a twelve-hour photo shoot and a Korean meal, he offers a tour of his house. "This window isn't supposed to be open," he says when we enter the bedroom, sounding like a cop on patrol. In an office upstairs, he finds a few discs out of order. "I can tell when my brother's been borrowing my CDs," he says, rearranging them. They run from Eighties groups such as the Human League and Men at Work to Oasis and U2. "We judge everything we do by the Clash and U2," he says. Every time it comes to making a decision, No Doubt ask, "What would the Clash or U2 do?"
He pulls out a daybook, in which he's listed a chronology of each day's events for the year of making Rock Steady. "Adrian has golf, Tom has surfing, Gwen has Gavin, I guess, and this is all I have," says Kanal. "I wake, eat and sleep No Doubt."
Dumont grew up as the only adopted child in a family of three kids. "His dad was really strict," says Stefani. "Like, if a chair was pushed out from the table when he went to bed, he'd have to go back and push the chair in. I think his parents' divorce was just so hard on him. And he really takes care of his mom."
An evening with Dumont, age 34: He invites me to his small West Hollywood apartment to hear the original Rock Steady demos, recorded on a mini-Pro Tools rig in the living room. He plays an unreleased track recorded to a Dr. Dre beat and a failed jam called "Expensive Sushi" with improvised Stefani lyrics and samples he downloaded from Napster. "I'm the opposite of Tony," he says. "I'm lazy -- I would just let something go and later on regret it. I always do this in my life."
Four days after Rock Steady is released, the band is backstage at Saturday Night Live. After touring with their idols U2, the success of the KROQ show and the buzz about Rock Steady, No Doubt feel like they are getting a second chance. On their first walk through the gauntlet of popularity, they were too confused to enjoy it. Kanal remembers that when No Doubt played Saturday Night Live last time, in 1996, he was so nervous he screwed up.
Tonight, there is other drama. Young's wife, who is seven months pregnant, is sick. And Young is worrying himself sick, too. He calls her a doctor and returns to the dressing room, his face ashen. Stefani walks in with a torn black top and a haircut that basically amounts to a mullet. She isn't feeling very sexy in her high heels tonight. "They're too high," she says. "I can't feel my feet." She switches shoes while Young places a paper bag next to the drum set in case he vomits during his performance. All goes smoothly, however, and after performing "Hey Baby" and "Hella Good," the band, plus Rossdale, climbs into a limo. "Can I borrow your phone?" Dumont asks Kanal. "I need to call my mom. She's been upset today."
As we sit in the limo, waiting to go to the Saturday Night Live afterparty, it sinks in what a strange group this is. You've got a mama's boy who's completely uncomfortable with himself, another guy who's so compulsive that he keeps a log of what he does every day, a punk with a mohawk who is actually a sensitive golf-playing father-to-be and a blond sex symbol who is actually a totally traditional love-smitten woman.
"Most people don't get it," Stefani says in the limo. "I love that you are getting it." And with that, she grabs Rossdale by the hand and jumps in another limo, and the lovers disappear into the night.

Promoting in London
Right now we're all in London doing promotion for Rock Steady. We're going to be on Top of the Pops here and a bunch of other TV shows. We have most nights off while we're here- can anyone suggest somewhere cool to hang out besides Nando's on Earls Court road? Someone told us there's a good Mexican restaurant in Camdentown, but we're still looking for it. We'll also be going to Germany and France to do more TV shows and interviews. The thing we're really looking forward to is our tour in North America, which should start in the middle of March. It's been almost two years since we've done a full-on tour and we're stoked to have 5 albums worth of material to choose from! Before that starts in February Adrian's going to have a baby, we might go to Japan and we'll probably film the next video from Rock Steady, although the song has yet to be decided. Take it easy out there! -Tom

Gwen and Gavin Engaged
No Doubt: Gwen and Gavin Engaged!
by Josh Grossberg
Jan 9, 2002, 11:30 AM PT
Gwen Stefani is no longer "just a girl." She's just a girl with a big ring on her finger.
The No Doubt singer, who recorded a song called "Marry Me" for the band's last album, is apparenly getting her wish--her longtime beau Gavin Rossdale has finally proposed.
Rossdale, frontman of the British post-Nirvana grunge band Bush, popped the question on New Year's morning and, according to a statement from Interscope Records, Stefani "happily accepted." a d v e r t i s e m e n t
The two will set a date later this year, the label says.
While Stefani and Rossdale have been making beautiful music together for about six years, splitting time between her Hollywood Hills home and Rossdale's London digs when not touring with their respective bands, they had always dodged the "M" word.
On No Doubt's Rock Steady released in December Stefani directly addressed her relationship in such confessional songs as "Don't Let Me Down," and "In My Head." "Making Out" saw her pining for her long distance lover (written no doubt while Rossdale was out on the road with his band) and "Detective" spoke to fears about being two-timed.
Stefani seemingly prefers to keep Rossdale in her spiderweb. In the latest issue of Jane magazine, she discussed the temptation all rockers, including her beau, face from groupies. "I'm in a band, and I know who those girls are," she says. "I know exactly what goes on backstage.
"I [wish I] had a little leash to walk him around."
Maybe now that the 32-year-old Stefani--who made the bindi chic and became a sex symbol in the process--can stop obsessing.
Both No Doubt and Bush hit it big in 1995, with their respective albums Tragic Kingdom and Sixteen Stone. Stefani and Rossdale also hit it off that same year. They met backstage at a December 1995 concert for the Los Angeles radio station KROQ and have been a twosome ever since. Their groups, which at the time were on the same label, even toured together in 1996.
The Stefani-led band, whose hits include "Spiderwebs," "Just a Girl" and "Don't Speak," has had the greater success over the past years, even though the follow-up albums Return to Saturn and Rock Steady have failed to match the monster sales of Tragic Kingdom. Nonetheless, the band's latest single, "Hey, Baby," has been receiving heavy radio play and Rock Steady ranks 10th on Billboard's album charts this week.
Bush, frequently blasted by critics as a shameless Nirvana/Pearl Jam ripoff, has scored hits with "Everything Zen," "Little Things," "Comedown" and "Glycerine." Like No Doubt, the band's subsequent albums--Razorblade Suitcase, The Science of Things and Deconstructed--didn't live up to the promise of its debut disc saleswise, but the group did begin to earn critical respect.
Rossdale, 34, and his cohorts most recently released the upbeat Golden State.
Before the disc was released, however, the band had to scrap its cover art (the image of a plane in silhouette was deemed inappropriate in the wake of September 11), change the title of the song "Speed Kills" to the friendlier "The People That We Love," and alter a lyric in the song "Heaful of Ghosts," removing the line "I'm at my best when I'm a terrorist inside."
Now, Rossdale has apparently come to the conclusion he's at his best with Stefani by his side.
This will be the first marriage for both.
